| About OSB |
The Oregon Symphonic Band (OSB) is Oregon’s premier symphonic band. Formed
in 1988, the award-winning band is comprised of 65 brass, wind and percussion players, all
volunteering to play together for their love of music. These players are
some of the Portland-area’s finest amateur and professional musicians. Each
year the band plays three concert series, playing a range of music from
marches to jazz, orchestral transcriptions and Broadway show tunes, to
contemporary band literature. OSB has performed at the Northwest regional conventions of the Music Educators National Conference, the Western International Band Clinic, and the Oregon Adult Band Festival. In December, 2006, the band had the prestigious honor of performing at the internationally renown Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Featured past soloists with the band include Allen Vizzutti (trumpet), James Walker (flute), Bill Watrous (trombone), Fred Sautter (cornet), Robert Spring (clarinet), John Cox (horn), Gordon Soli (bassoon) and Adair Chappell (vocalist). In October, 2006, OSB premiered “Beautiful Oregon”, a piece commissioned by the band and composed by James Barnes. In 2006 OSB was awarded the prestigious Sudler Silver Scroll award by the John Philip Sousa foundation, the highest award a community band can receive. As of October, 2007, OSB makes its home at The Auditorium at Jackson Middle School in SW Portland. The band has often invited selected high school students to perform with them, in keeping with its mission of promoting music education in our schools. During the summer, OSB regularly performs at the “Showtime at Shute” summer concerts at Shute Park in Hillsboro. Dr. Michael Burch-Pesses, director of bands at Pacific University, is the conductor and music director for the Oregon Symphonic Band. |
